Make your own apple pie spice at home in minutes. This blend is perfect for adding a touch of fall flavor to desserts, breakfast, and snacks. I love having a jar of this in my spice rack, especially as the weather cools. It’s my secret ingredient for adding a warm, spiced flavor to almost anything.
It’s that time of year for the warm, spicy smells of fall baking. There is something about the smell of cinnamon and spices that screams apples, pumpkins, and everything fall. So instead of buying a pricey spice blend, I decided to make my own apple pie spice. It’s fast, easy, and super affordable.
I love making my own spice blends because they are easy to customize. This apple pie seasoning is one of my favorites to have on hand to use it for things like apple pie filling, oatmeal, and sugar cookies.
If you like making your own spice mixes at home, be sure to try Jamaican jerk seasoning, sloppy joe spice mix, and french fry seasoning.

How to make homemade apple pie spice
This recipe uses just 3 spices to keep it simple.
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Allspice
There are some other recipes that include cardamom and ground ginger. If you would like to include them, use 1/2 teaspoon each.
Simply stir the ingredients together to make your apple pie seasoning.
What is the difference between apple pie spice and pumpkin pie spice?
There is just a slight difference between the two spice blends. Pumpkin pie spice includes clove and does not use allspice.
How to use
There are so many ways to incorporate this apple pie seasoning blend, it’s also great to give away as a gift. Some of my favorite recipes you can use this with include:
It’s also great in pancakes and waffles.
How to store
Keep your homemade spice mix in a jar with a lid or an airtight container in a cool, dark place. This mix should last about a year depending on how old each spice was when opened.
Recipe tips
- Try and use fresh spices. Make sure to look at the date on the container before mixing.
- Homemade spice mixes make wonderful gifts. Put them in a nice jar with a little twine or ribbon for a gift.
- If you are making a larger amount, simply double or triple the recipe below.
What can be used in place of apple pie spice?
Making your own spice mix at home allows us to adjust the amount of mix you make. So if you don’t want to buy a whole apple pie spice mix from the store, it’s easy to make what you need at home.
If you don’t have all three spices, I would recommend using at least the cinnamon and nutmeg.

We had a lovely cool breeze yesterday morning and it felt like fall. I hope we can go apple picking this year. Your apple spice mix seems perfect!
I’m going to make a batch of your apple pie spice this fall when our apples are ready to harvest. When we’re really organized we peel and cut the apples, toss them in spice, and vacuum seal them for pies and crumbles.
I like the idea of this spice combination. It makes me think of fall, warm weather, and comfort.
Perfect timing for the upcoming Fall season. Why waste money buying spices when you can make them at home. Great idea!
I actually prefer apple things to pumpkin in the fall. Nothing beats the smell of cinnamon and apples!
