Cake mix waffles are a family breakfast favorite! Slightly sweet and only 4 ingredients needed. This recipe can be easily customized.
There are so many delicious ways to use cake mix like cake mix cookie bars , banana bread and brownies.
Waffles are always something we love to make on the weekend. We usually serve them with a little butter and of course syrup and then let the kids add any extras like whipped cream and sprinkles or diced fruit.
My husband is usually our waffle maker and he is the one that told me about making them with cake mix. We ran out of waffle mix so he decided to try using the cake mix we had in our pantry. We loved how they turned out! Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside and a hint of sweetness.
Why this recipe works
- Cake mix is the perfect ingredient to make this recipe super easy.

- Crispy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside.

- Prepare: Preheat waffle iron and spray with non-stick cooking spray.
- Mix: Stir together cake mix, eggs, water and oil in a large bowl. Mix until combined.
- Cook: Pour batter on waffle iron and close the top. Cook for iron’s recommended time.
- Serve: Serve warm plain or with your favorite toppings like butter and syrup.
Variations
There are many ways to change up these waffles but using add-ins or toppings. Here are a few variation suggestions.
- Cake mix: This recipe uses yellow, but feel free to use your favorite cake mix flavor like chocolate, red velvet, white, strawberry and spice.
- Fruit: Try adding fruit to the batter like blueberries, diced banana or diced strawberries. Avoid watery fruit like watermelon and cantaloupe.
- Candy: We enjoy adding a cup of mini chocolate chips, white chocolate chips or peanut butter chips. You could also add sprinkles.
- Nuts: Mix in some chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts for a crunchy texture.
Recipe tips and how to store
- Don’t overfill the waffle iron or the batter will spill out once you close the lid.
- Have leftover batter? Use to make mini cupcakes or muffins.
- Try topping with cinnamon butter for extra flavor.
- When making them, don’t stack while you are waiting, keep on a baking rack or on a baking sheet in a 200 degree oven until ready to serve.
- Store: To store, place in airtight bag or container and keep in the refrigerator for up to three days.
- Freeze: To freeze, I like to let waffles completely cool and then place on baking sheet in the freezer until they freeze. Place them in freezer safe bags and store for up to 2 months.
- Reheat: Let them thaw. Reheat in the oven on 300 for about 10 minutes.
What waffle iron should I use?
I use this round Cuisinart but also enjoy Belgian style waffle maker.
