My chipped beef dip recipe is a retro cream cheese dip that is packed full of flavor. It’s one of my go-to dips for game day and holidays because it can be made ahead of time and only needs a few ingredients.

Why you’ll love this chipped beef dip

I love a good cheese ball and one of my favorites is my chipped beef cheese ball. But sometimes I just don’t feel like forming the cheese ball and waiting for it to sit, so I turn to this super simple chipped beef dip because it’s fast and easy to make.

Typically I serve this dip cold but you can bake it and serve it hot. This recipe is super versatile and easy to adjust for your taste preference.

What is chipped beef?

It’s a dried beef that has been pressed and salted. The beef usually comes in paper thin slices and packaged either in a jar or in packets. I find mine in the refrigerated deli meat section. It can also be referred to as dried beef.

Chipped beef dip ingredients

  • Chipped beef – I use Buddig brand dried beef which can typically be found by the deli meat. You can also use jarred chipped beef.
  • Cream cheese – I use full fat cream cheese but you can use low-fat for this recipe.
  • Sour cream – This adds another layer of flavor to the dip.
  • Horseradish – This adds just a hint of spiciness. It does not make the dip hot.
  • Garlic powder – Adds delicious garlic flavor.
  • Worcestershire sauce – Adds a layer of umami flavor.
  • Green onions – Diced green onions give some color and texture.

Step five: Serve or cover and refrigerate until ready to eat.

How to serve chipped beef dip

I like serving this dip with crackers, chips, or toast. You could also serve it with cut up vegetables like carrots, peppers, and cucumbers.

This dip also is great spread on a tortilla, rolled up and then sliced into tortilla roll-ups.

I also like spreading this dip on bread to make little tea sandwiches.

Heather’s recipe tips and variations

  • Make sure to let the cream cheese soften at room temperature so that it’s extra creamy.
  • Be sure to dice the green onion and beef into small, bite-sized pieces.
  • You can feel free to omit the horseradish or add a little more depending on how spicy you want your dip.
  • If you would like a cheesier dip, mix in 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese.
  • Be sure to remove the dip from the refrigerator about 30 minutes before serving so that it softens up. This helps is make it easier to dip.

How to store chipped beef dip

If you have any leftover dip, transfer it into an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. When ready to serve, remove the dip from the refrigerator 30 minutes prior to serving so that it can soften.

I would not recommend freezing this dip.

Common questions

Can I bake this dip?

Is this dip considered low carb?

Yes, I would consider this low carb. Try serving it with cucumber slices or other vegetables.
