Colorado Bulldog Cocktail

The Colorado bulldog is a simple creamy cocktail made with coffee liqueur, vodka, cream and cola. It’s basically a White Russian topped off with a splash of cola. It’s unknown who invented the drink or how it was developed, all we know is that it’s delicious.

What’s in a Colorado Bulldog?

Coffee liqueur – Use your favorite like Kahlua. Kahlua is made with rum, sugar and coffee and is easily found at most stores selling liqueur.

Vodka – No need to use an expensive vodka. I like using a plain vodka but you could also use a vanilla vodka.

Cola – Use something like Coca Cola, Pepsi or even store brand cola. Diet cola will also work with this recipe.

Cream – I like using half and half for this recipe. You can substitute with milk or even heavy cream for a richer flavor.

Ice – This is needed to make the drink extra cold. You will need enough ice to fill the glass.

How to make this Colorado Bulldog recipe

This drink recipe is very simple to make. No shaker is needed, just the ingredients, glass and a spoon to stir.

  1. Fill a glass with ice. This cocktail is typically made using a shorter glass but a tall glass works well too.
  2. Pour in liqueur and vodka. Add in cream and then slowly pour in the cola.
  3. Give the drink a good stir and serve cold.

Colorado Bulldog Drink Recipe Tips

  • I recommend chilling the vodka and coffee liqueur before making. This helps make the drink extra chilled.
  • Make sure to slowly pour the soda into the drink. It will start to fizz and may cause the half and half to curdle. Don’t worry if it does curdle, you will be stirring the drink to combine.
  • You can alter the ingredient ratios to your taste.
  • A shaker is not needed but if you prefer, you can shake coffee liqueur, vodka and half and half together in a cocktail shaker with ice, pour in glass and then top with cola.
  • This can be served in a short or tall glass. Some say if served in a tall glass it’s referred to as just a “Bulldog”.

How to serve

Serve this cocktail over ice. You can add a maraschino cherry or even whipped cream for a little added sweetness.

How to store

This popular cocktail is best served fresh. The carbonation of the cola really makes this drink delicious. If you do have leftovers, you can store in a container like a Mason jar in the refrigerator for about one day.

Colorado Bulldog Cocktail FAQs

Can this be made non-alcoholic?

Yes, you can substitute the Kahlua with cold espresso and leave out the vodka for a non-alcoholic mocktail.

Can this be made into a large batch drink?

Yes, this can be made in a large batch. Multiply the ingredients with the amount of servings you need.
Mix the coffee liqueur, vodka and half and half together in a pitcher. Fill glasses with ice and then pour the mixture into glasses. I would recommend waiting to add the cola until just ready to drink so that it stays bubbly and carbonated.

Does Kahlua need to be refrigerated?

This rum based, coffee flavored liqueur surprisingly does not contain any cream. An unopened bottle can be stored in a cool, dark place. Once it’s opened, it still does not require refrigeration, however if it’s something you drink often, you might consider keeping it in the refrigerator since it’s best served cold.
