I am all about a good dip when it comes to hosting a gathering. This ground beef taco dip has become a favorite and one of my go-to recipes when I want to impress my guests.
It’s the perfect combination of hearty, flavorful layers that are always a huge hit at parties.
This taco dip recipe is both tasty and quick to put together, so it’s great for a last minute appetizer. I like serving it with tortilla chips or corn chips.
Why this recipe works
Simple – If you are serving this for Taco Tuesday, Cinco De Mayo, game day, or just because, this easy appetizer is so simple to put together with just a few ingredients.
Versatile – This recipe can easily be altered to your taste preference.
Ingredients needed
- Ground beef – You can cook fresh ground beef, use this slow cooker taco meat, or even leftover taco meat.
- Taco seasonings – This recipe calls for 2 envelopes of taco seasoning but you can also use homemade seasoning.
- Diced tomatoes and green chilis – A can of Rotel is used to cook with the meat. This ingredient is optional but it adds a nice flavor and a little heat. (If you don’t use this, add 1/2 cup of water in with the seasoning and meat.)
- Cream cheese – Used to make the creamy base. Make sure that it is softened.
- Sour cream – Part of the creamy base.
- Toppings – Add your favorite toppings to the beef and cream cheese layer. Some favorites are lettuce, shredded cheese, green onions, pico de gallo, guacamole, black olives, and more.
How to make ground beef taco dip
Step one: Using an electric mixer, mix together softened cream cheese, sour cream, and one envelope of taco seasoning. Spread into a 9 x 9 baking dish and then store in the refrigerator while cooking the meat.
Step two: Brown ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook until meat has browned and cook through. Drain off excess grease.
Stir in the other envelope of taco seasoning and the can of Rotel.
Step three: Layer the beef over the cream cheese mixture. Add your favorite taco toppings over the ground beef layer and serve with tortilla chips.
Recipe tips
- Make sure the cream cheese is softened. This will make it easier to mix with the sour cream.
- If you don’t have Rotel, you can try adding a can of diced green chiles.
- I recommend using a hand mixer or stand mixer to combine the cream cheese and sour cream. This helps to get a creamy base.
Taco dip variations
Beans – If you like beans, try adding a layer of refried beans or black beans.
Meat – You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey or ground chicken.
How to store
Store any leftovers in an airtight container or covered with plastic wrap in the refrigerator. It will last 2-3 days. After that it could start to become runny and soggy.
