Whats not to love about nachos made with tater tots? They are so easy to make and tasty.
- Quick – This recipe can be made in about 30 minutes. No need to spend hours in the kitchen.
- Versatility – Beef totchos can be easily customized to fit all different tastes.
- Crowd Favorite – It’s hard to find someone who doesn’t like this combination of ingredients and flavors.
Ingredients
- Tater Tots – Choose your favorite brand of frozen tater tots.
- Ground Beef – I like using a lean ground beef for this recipe. You can substitute with ground chicken or ground turkey.
- Taco Seasonings – Use a packet of seasonings or homemade taco seasoning.
- Cheese – Shredded cheddar cheese, colby jack, or a Mexican blend cheese works well.
- Toppings – Choose your favorite toppings like sour cream, green onion, salsa, jalapenos, guacamole, shredded lettuce, and more.
How to make ground beef totchos
Step one: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil. If using foil, lightly spray with non-stick cooking spray. Spread frozen tater tots on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 30 minutes.
Step two: While the tater tots are cooking, cook the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Make sure to break up the beef while it’s cooking. Once cooked through. drain off any excess grease.
Step three: Pour in water and taco seasonings. Stir the beef and seasonings around until combined.
Step four: Once the tater tots have cooked, top them with cooked ground beef. Top the beef with shredded cheese. Place back in the oven and cook another 4-5 minutes or until cheese melts.
Tips for success
- Crispy tater tots – Bake your tater tots a little longer than the bag suggests. You want them to be extra crispy to hold up to the toppings.
- Cheese – Make sure to use a good melting cheese like colby jack, cheddar, and more. Freshly grated cheese also tends to melt better than pre-packed cheese.
- Drain grease – Make sure to drain off any extra grease once the beef has been cooked.
- Serve immediately – I recommend serving the totchos right after they have cooked. You want them nice and warm when serving.
How to store leftovers
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It’s best if you can store leftovers without any of the extra toppings. It makes it easier to reheat the totchos in the oven at 375 degrees for about 10 minutes.
I don’t recommend freezing leftovers. It does not thaw well.
