Hot chocolate fudge is an easy and delicious bite of sweetness that combines the rich flavor of hot cocoa and chocolate fudge. Add in some marshmallows for that true hot cocoa experience.
Hot chocolate powder is not just for drinking. It works well in different dessert recipes like hot chocolate poke cake and this hot chocolate fudge recipe.
Why this recipe works
- Simple – Hot cocoa fudge is so easy to make. Just a few simple ingredients are needed, you might even already have them in your kitchen.
- Great for gifting – This melt in your mouth confection is perfect for gifting.
Ingredients needed
Semi-sweet chocolate chips – The semisweet chocolate chips helps to balance the richness of the chocolate.
Milk chocolate chips – Adds rich, chocolate flavor.
Butter – Unsalted sweet cream butter.
Sweetened condensed milk – This can be found in a 14 oz can in the baking aisle of the grocery store.
Vanilla extract – Gives a sweet, warm flavor to the fudge.
Hot chocolate mix – Adds that hot cocoa flavor to the fudge. Feel free to use packets of mix or your own homemade hot chocolate mix. If using homemade you will need 6 tablespoons of mix.
Mini Marshmallows – The recipe calls for 3 cups but you can add a little extra or less depending on your preference.
How to make hot chocolate fudge
Step one: Line a pan or casserole dish with parchment paper or foil. Make sure to lightly spray with non-stick cooking spray to help prevent the fudge from sticking.
Step two: Place chocolate chips and butter in a double boiler which is a glass bowl sitting on a saucepan with water. Stir in sweetened condensed milk.
Step three: Stir in hot chocolate powder and stir until everything is melted. Stir in vanilla once everything has melted.
Step four: Fold in mini marshmallows. Pour the fudge mixture into prepared pan. Top with remaining mini marshmallows and gently press into the fudge. Cover and place in refrigerator for 4-5 hours or until fudge is set.
Can this fudge be made in the microwave?
Yes, to make in the microwave: Place the chocolate chips, butter, sweetened condensed milk, and hot chocolate mix into a microwave-safe bowl. Heat for 45 seconds and stir. Keep heating in 15 second intervals until chocolate is melted.
Stir in the vanilla and marshmallows. Pour into prepared dish and top with remaining marshmallows and chill in the refrigerator.
How to cut fudge
The best way to cut fudge so that you get nice clean edges is to use a large, sharp knife that has been dipped in hot water and then dried off with a towel. The warmth of the knife blade makes it easier to get a clean cut.
I recommend cutting into small pieces since the fudge is rich.
Recipe tips
- You can use the double boiler method or microwave method for melting chocolate.
- Make sure to stir the chocolate frequently while it’s melting to help prevent burning.
Variations
Peppermint – Try adding crushed candy canes, peppermint candies, or 1/4 teaspoon of peppermint extract into the fudge mix for a minty flavor.
Nuts – You can add 1/2 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts if you like a little crunch.
Marshmallows – You can use the colorful mini marshmallows or even dehydrated marshmallows.
How to store fudge
Store: This fudge recipe can be stored at room temperature or in the refrigerator in an airtight container. It will last about 1 week.
Freeze: You can also freeze the fudge. I recommend cutting it into pieces before placing in a freezer safe bag or container. You can freeze for up to 4 months. When ready to serve, remove from freezer and let sit out at room temperature to thaw.
