Spinach dip in bread bowl with vegetables

You will love this Knorr Spinach Dip

It’s not the holidays if I don’t have a large bowl of Knorr’s spinach dip on the table. I can remember the first time I tried it when I was a kid. The taste was so good it actually made me want to eat vegetables.

I have kept up the tradition of serving this classic spinach dip at all of our parties, holidays, and game days. It’s so easy to put together with the help of a packet of Knorr vegetable mix.

If you really want to impress your guests with a beautiful presentation, try serving this dip in a hollowed out bread bowl surrounded by vegetables and bread cubes.

Try serving this dip along with some of my other favorite appetizers like bacon wrapped water chestnuts, little smokies, and ranch crackers.

Ingredients needed for Knorr spinach dip recipe

Just a few simple ingredients are needed to make this dip recipe.

  • Knorr vegetable mix – This mix can usually be found on the soup aisle or by the salad dressing.
  • Mayonnaise – Use your favorite mayonnaise like Duke’s or Best Foods. I like to use full fat for the flavor but you can substitute with low-fat mayonnaise.
  • Sour cream – Use your favorite sour cream.
  • Water chestnuts – I like adding water chestnuts to add crunch and texture.
  • Frozen chopped spinach – Use thawed frozen chopped spinach. Make sure to squeeze out any extra liquid.
  • Green onions – Diced green onions add extra flavor and color.

Step one: Prepare – Place frozen spinach in a microwave safe bowl. Heat in 30 second intervals until it’s completely thawed. Squeeze out any excess water out of the spinach. This is very important to avoid watery dip.

Step two: Mix – Place mayonnaise, sour cream, water chestnuts, and Knorr vegetable mix in a large bowl. Stir to combine.

Step four: Chill – Cover the dip and chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve. I recommend letting it chill for at least an hour to let the flavors come together.

Can you use fresh spinach instead of frozen?

Yes, if you don’t have frozen spinach you can cook down fresh spinach. Take 1 pound of fresh spinach and remove any large stems. Put the spinach in a large skillet and cook over medium heat until it starts to wilt down. This will take about 4-5 minutes.

After the spinach cools a few minutes, chop the spinach into smaller pieces. Squeeze as much excess water out of the spinach as possible.

Heather’s recipe tips

  • Make sure to squeeze out any of the excess water from the thawed spinach.
  • Chop the water chestnuts into small pieces.
  • If you would like the dip to have a thicker consistency, add 4 ounces of softened cream cheese.
  • For the best flavor, let the dip chill in the refrigerator for at least 1-2 hours. It’s the perfect dip to make ahead of time. If I am making this dip for a party, I like to make the day before to let the flavors come together.

Knorr spinach dip recipe variations

This dip is easy to adjust. A few suggestions include:

  • Artichoke hearts – Add about 1/2 cup of diced artichoke hearts.
  • Cheese – Try adding 1/2 cup of shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese.
  • Protein – You can add cooked, chopped bacon, chipped beef, or even chopped chicken to add protein to the dip.

How to make hot Knorr spinach dip

This spinach dip can also be baked and served hot. There are a few adjustments needed to the recipe.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. Mix together thawed frozen spinach, 8 ounces softened cream cheese, 1 package of Knorr vegetable dip, 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 1 can of chopped water chestnuts, and 1 cup of shredded Monterey Jack cheese.
  3. Spread the dip in baking dish and then top with 1/2 cup of shredded Parmesan cheese. Bake for 25-30 minutes.

How to serve Knorr spinach dip

This is a great dip that pairs well with many things. We like serving alongside a charcuterie board or just having some in the refrigerator to eat with a veggie tray. Serve it in a bowl or a bread bowl. Here are a few favorite dippers:

  • Vegetables – Cut up vegetables like cucumber, carrots, celery, bell peppers, and more are great to serve.
  • Toast – Use small pieces of bread cubes or toast to scoop up this creamy appetizer.
  • Baked potato – Use any leftovers to top a baked potato.
  • Crackers or chips – Things like butter crackers and corn chips are always a great way to scoop up delicious dip.

Common questions

How long does Knorr spinach dip last in fridge?

Store: Leftover spinach dip will last 3-4 days in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
Freeze: Can you freeze spinach dip? I would recommend not freezing. The sour cream and mayonnaise don’t hold up well in the freezer.

What are the best crackers for spinach dip?

I find a hearty, thicker cracker works well with this dip. Crackers like Ritz, wheat crackers, Saltines, and more can be served with this spinach dip.

Can I substitute Greek yogurt?

Yes, you can substitute the sour cream with plain Greek yogurt.

  1. I love this recipe but Knorr no longer makes the vegetable mix package. I’m devastated. The vegetable soup does not taste the same at all. Knorr still has the recipe on their website but I spoke to a person there. No longer selling it.

  2. Hi! I made Spinach Dip for my family several years ago. My grandmother stared requesting it. But she would ask for Spinach Dip , but leave out the spinach!!
We still get a good chuckle out of it!she passed away just before turning 100! I planned to make
“Her” Spinach Dip for her party!

  3. Has Knorr changed the ingredients in the Vegetable Recipe Mix packet used for the spinach dip? The Spinach dip recipe has always been on the back of the packet.

    1. You are correct I noticed that too. It taste the same but if you need the recipe just go to Pinterest and type in knorr spinach dip recipe and it’ll come right up.

  4. Actually I believe the original called for Knoor leak soup mix and 16 oz Mayo, no cheese and water chestnuts drained. I find the taste is better. I get it on Amazon.

  5. You show chopped scallions but have no onions as an ingredient. And you say must be changed to serve hot but never say how to do so.

    1. Hi Dorothy, yes, sorry the scallions are an optional ingredient. They can be mixed in the dip or used as a garnish on top. For the hot version, add 1 cup of shredded cheese like cheddar or swiss, 1 can of canned artichoke hearts, drained and chopped, 3/4 cup mayo, 10 oz chopped spinach, 1 pack of knorr vegetable mix. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Mix ingredients and and spread in a baking dish. Bake for 30 minutes or until hot. Hope this helps! Enjoy!
