My marry me tortellini recipe is a different take on the popular marry me chicken recipe. A creamy, sun dried tomato sauce is combined with tortellini and Italian sausage for a meal you won’t forget!
If you are online, you are probably familiar with “marry me chicken”, the flavorful dish that is rumored to be so good it could lead to a proposal. I decided to take those same amazing flavors and combine them with Italian sausage and tortellini. The result is a rich, creamy meal that is downright marriage worthy.
After a few rounds of testing to get it just right, my husband declared that he would ask me to marry him again after taking a bite. That’s when I knew the recipe was a keeper, and so is he.
So why is it called “marry me”, and what do all these recipes have in common? It’s the sun dried tomatoes. The sweet, tangy flavor really brings something special to every dish. When it’s combined with cheesy pasta, a creamy sauce, and sausage, it a dish that is definitely love at first bite!

Why you should make this recipe

Ingredients
- Tortellini – I like using refrigerated cheese tortellini but feel free to use frozen tortellini that has been thawed out.
- Italian sausage – Use your favorite ground Italian sausage.
- Oil – I like using a tablespoon of oil from the sun dried tomato jar. You can substitute with olive oil.
- Garlic – You will need about 3 cloves of minced garlic. You can also use jarred minced garlic.
- Flour – All purpose flour is used.
- Sun dried tomatoes in oil – This can typically be found in the pasta aisle at the grocery store.
- Chicken broth – Use chicken broth or vegetable broth.
- Red pepper flakes – This adds a hint of spice.
- Italian seasoning – Adds amazing flavor to the creamy sauce.
- Ground black pepper
- Salt
- Parmesan cheese – Grated parmesan cheese helps to make the creamy sauce.
- Heavy cream – Feel free to use heavy cream or half and half.
- Spinach – Fresh spinach adds color and flavor to the recipe.
How to make marry me tortellini

- Put the Italian sausage in a large skillet. Cook over medium heat. Make sure to break up the sausage while cooking. Once cooked through, remove the sausage and set aside.
- Using the same pan, add in 1 tablespoon of oil from the sun dried tomato jar. Mix in the garlic, salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes. Stir for 30 seconds.
- Add in the chopped sun dried tomatoes and flour. Stir to combine.
- Stir in the chicken broth. Let the broth come to a boil and simmer for 3-4 minutes.
- Pour in the tortellini. Stir the tortellini in with the ingredients. Cover the pan with a lid and cook for 4 minutes.
- Add in the cooked sausage, parmesan cheese, heavy cream, and spinach. Stir and remove from heat.

- I recommend using freshly grated Parmesan cheese if possible.
- If you decided to use frozen tortellini, I recommend thawing it out before using.
- Make sure to use sun dried tomatoes that are packed in oil.
- Don’t over cook the tortellini. Make sure to cook it until al dente so it doesn’t get mushy.
Variations
There are many ways to add your own take on this simple marry me tortellini recipe. Here are a few suggestions:
- Pasta – You can substitute cheese tortellini with spinach or sausage tortellini. You can also use ravioli or gnocchi.
- Protein – You can substitute with chicken sausage, bacon, ground beef, or ground turkey.
- Vegetables – You can substitute spinach with fresh kale or leave it out all together.
What to serve with marry me tortellini
This is a great dish on it’s own but you can serve it with something like a simple house salad and garlic bread.
Storage
Keep any leftovers in an airtight container. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. I like to reheat the pasta in a skillet on the stove or in the microwave.
I don’t recommend freezing this recipe.

I find this dish is the best served fresh but you could prepare the night before and reheat in on the stove. You might want to add a small splash of heavy cream to help the sauce.
