We try to have pizza night at least a couple times a month and it’s always a dinner we look forward to. Lately, we have been swapping out traditional dough for puff pastry, and let me tell you it’s a game changer.

This puff pastry pizza started when I had a leftover puff pastry dough from the holidays and wanted to put it to good use. I decided to experiment by using it as a pizza crust. Everyone LOVED it, especially my daughter who usually leaves her crust behind. That’s when I knew we would be making this again.

My favorite part is that it’s so fast and easy to make, you just have to blind-bake the dough and then add your favorite toppings. There are so many fun combinations, my current go-to is BBQ chicken pizza.

Why you should try pizza with puff pastry crust

  • The crust. Puff pastry makes a perfect, flakey crust that is light and crispy. Plus it’s faster than making a homemade dough.
  • Fun for entertaining. This is great for a pizza night, game night, parties, and more.
  • No rolling needed. No need to roll the dough. Simply unfold it and it’s ready to go.
  • Customizable. Easily customizable with your favorite toppings.

Ingredients

Just 4 ingredients are needed for a base pizza.

  • Puff pastry dough – 1 thawed puff pastry sheet.
  • Egg – Brushing a beaten egg over the crust gives it a beautiful, golden color.
  • Pizza sauce – Use your favorite pizza sauce or marinara sauce.
  • Cheese – I like using mozzarella but you can use a variety of different cheeses.
  • Toppings – Choose your favorite pizza toppings. I also like adding a sprinkle of pizza seasoning.

Heather’s recipe tips

  • Be sure to thaw properly. It’s important that you follow the directions on the puff pastry dough box for thawing.
  • Use parchment paper. I like using parchment paper with a little dusting of flour to help prevent the dough from sticking.
  • Making the crust. Make sure to to cut all the way through the dough with making the outline of the crust.
  • Use freshly shredded cheese. Freshly shredded cheese melts the best. If you are in a pinch, you can use prepackaged cheese.
  • Don’t put on too many toppings. There is a bit of a delicate balance when it comes to adding sauce and toppings. Make sure to only use a thin layer of sauce and don’t add too many toppings to help prevent the dough from getting soggy.
  • Make individual pizzas. If you would like to make personal pizzas, you can cut the puff pastry dough into thirds before assembling.

Puff pastry pizza toppings

There are so many ways to top your pizza. A few ideas include:

  • Classic pepperoni: Cheese and pepperoni.
  • Supreme: Pepperoni, Italian sausage, onion, peppers, and mushrooms.
  • Hawaiian style: Ham, pineapple, and red onion.
  • BBQ chicken: Substitute the pizza sauce with BBQ sauce. Add cheddar cheese blend, rotisserie chicken, onion, and cilantro.
  • Pesto: Substitute the pizza sauce with pesto sauce. Add cheese, cherry tomatoes, and artichoke hearts.
  • Breakfast pizza: Make a breakfast pizza with eggs, bacon, and cheddar cheese.

Serving suggestions

This puff pastry pizza is wonderful on it’s own but you could serve it with something simple like a house salad.

I also like serving it with dipping sauces like extra pizza sauce, garlic butter sauce, or even ranch.

How to store

Store: You can keep any leftover pizza in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days.

Reheat: Reheat in the oven at 350 degrees F or you can reheat the pizza in the air fryer.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to bake the puff pastry dough first?

Yes, it’s best to blind bake the puff pastry to make sure that it is cooked and that it doesn’t get soggy.

Do I have to use an egg wash?

The egg wash helps to make the crust golden brown. You don’t have to use it, but I recommend using the egg wash for the best results.
