My copycat Red Robin campfire sauce recipe is so tasty and is perfect for dipping or spreading on some favorite foods like french fries, chicken fingers and hamburgers. Make this Red Robin inspired copycat sauce in about 5 minutes with just 4 ingredients.

Homemade Campfire sauce

One of my son’s favorite restaurants is Red Robin because he loves to dip his fries in their version of fry sauce, Campfire sauce. It’s a sauce created at Red Robin restaurant that is basically a mixture of ketchup, mayonnaise, and seasonings. This sauce is creamy, slightly sweet with a little bit of smoky flavor.

I love creating copycat versions of restaurant sauces like this Wingstop ranch and Taco Bell quesadilla sauce so of course I went to work creating a copycat version of this Red Robin sauce.

Instead of using ketchup, I decided to use BBQ sauce in this recipe to capture the smoky, bold flavor that is found in the restaurant sauce.

I also recommend this zesty sauce and Zaxby’s sauce if you are wanting a delicious fry sauce.

Why you’ll love this homemade fry sauce

  • Simple – Only 4 ingredients needed to make this sauce recipe.
  • Taste – This sauce really has amazing flavor, especially for only having a few ingredients.
  • Customizable – You can easily adjust the ingredients to your taste preference.

Campfire sauce ingredients

  • BBQ sauce – Use your favorite inexpensive hickory barbeque sauce. I used Sweet Baby Rays Hickory and Brown Sugar for this recipe. Any BBQ sauce will work well, however, I do think a smokey BBQ sauce will give you that restaurant flavor.
  • Mayonnaise – Choose your favorite full fat mayonnaise brand, like Duke’s or Best Foods brand, works the best but you can substitute with low-fat or even vegan mayonnaise.
  • Chipotle chili powder – Chipotle chili powder is made up of only ground up dried chipotle pepper. You can find chipotle powder in the spice section of the grocery store. It gives this sauce a wonderful, smoky flavor. ***If you can’t find it or don’t want to buy a whole bottle, feel free to substitute with chili powder or paprika.
  • Garlic powder – Adds a nice balance to the sweetness of the BBQ sauce.

Heather’s recipe tips and variations

  • If you have time, let the sauce chill in the refrigerator for at least an hour. It really helps to let the flavors blend together and really gives the sauce the best taste.
  • You can add a little extra spice by adding a splash or two of Tabasco hot sauce.
  • Feel like trying something new? Use half cup of ranch dressing and half cup mayonnaise with the rest of the ingredients to make a ranch campfire mayo.
  • To make this Keto friendly, use a low-carb BBQ sauce.

How to store homemade Campfire sauce

Store this sauce in the refrigerator in an airtight container. It will last for about one week.

This campfire sauce doesn’t keep well in the freezer. The mayonnaise will start to separate when it thaws causing it to have a strange texture.

How to serve copycat Campfire sauce

This copycat recipe is seriously good on so many things. I could even eat it with a spoon. Here are a few suggestions on how to serve this copycat sauce:

Dip: Serve this as a dip for things like chicken tenders, chicken nuggets, onion rings, french fries, sweet potato fries, and egg rolls.

Spread: Try spreading on a bun for a hamburger, chicken sandwiches and on wraps.

Dressing: You can thin out the sauce with a splash of milk to use for a dressing on delicious salad. It’s also great drizzled over tacos and nachos.
