Step one: Place the butter in a large pot. Melt over low heat. Add the marshmallow creme and stir until melted and combined.

Step two: Remove the pot from the heat. Stir in vanilla extract, salt, and the cereal.

These are super simple to make but here are a few tips I have found help to get the perfect treat.

  • Stir constantly. Make sure to constantly stir when melting the butter and marshmallow fluff to prevent burning.
  • Make sure to press them into the dish. Be sure to press them in the dish so that they hold together.
  • Let them rest. I like letting the rest 1-2 hours to make sure they congeal and hold together.

Variations

You can easily change these Rice Krispie treats for a little different flavor. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats – You can use Cocoa Krispies and a few mini chocolate chips for a chocolate version.
  • Peanut butter Rice Krispie Treats – Add 1/4 cup of creamy peanut butter to the marshmallow creme.
  • Other Cereal – Try making this recipe with Fruity Pebbles for something a little different.
  • Mix-ins – You can add in colorful sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, or even a few drops of food coloring.

How to store Rice Krispie treats

Store: Keep in an airtight container or bag at room temperature. I don’t recommend refrigerating them because they will become too hard.

Freeze: They can be frozen in a freezer safe bag for up to 2 months. Let thaw at room temperature before eating.
