My copycat recipe for Zax sauce is a spot on version of the original that you can find at a Zaxby’s restaurant. I’m sharing the simple ingredients you need, plus a few tips, to make your own at home in a matter of minutes.
Homemade Zax Sauce
I’m no stranger to fry sauce now that we live in Utah but I do miss the delicious Zax sauce I would get from Zaxby’s in Georgia.
Zaxby’s is a popular restaurant chain in the south that is known for its fried chicken, seasoned fries, and zalads. It’s similar to Raising Canes and just like Canes, they serve a creamy, flavorful sauce with their meals.
Since I don’t live close to the restaurant anymore, I knew I had to try making a copycat version of Zaxby’s sauce at home. I experimented with different ingredient combinations and came up with this recipe that I think tastes very close to the original.

Zaxby’s sauce ingredients
For my copycat recipe you will need just a few simple ingredients.
- Ketchup – Gives a little sweetness to the sauce.
- Mayonnaise – I like using Dukes mayonnaise but you can use your favorite mayo.
- White vinegar – Vinegar adds a little tang to the sauce. You can substitute with apple cider vinegar.
- Worcestershire sauce – Ties all of the ingredients together.
- Garlic powder – Adds delicious flavor to the sauce.
- Black pepper – Ground black pepper add a touch of spice to the sauce.
- Seasoned salt – I use Lawry’s seasoned salt.

How to use Zax sauce
There are many ways you can use this tasty sauce. A few of my favorite include:
- Serve with chicken: This is a great sauce to serve with chicken strips, chicken nuggets, chicken fries, chicken tenderloins and more.
- Dipping sauce: It’s perfect as a dipping sauce for french fries, onion rings, tater tots, sweet potato fries, and more.
- As a spread: Use it to spread on hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, wraps, steak sandwich, and more.
- Dressing: Drizzle over a salad.
Heather’s recipe tips
- I recommend letting the sauce sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to let the flavors really come together. If you can make it the night before, even better. The longer it sits, the better it tastes.
- If you prefer your sauce spicy, you can add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a splash of hot sauce.
- If you would like to use this as a salad dressing, you could add a little extra vinegar or a splash of milk to thin out the sauce.
- Making this for a crowd? You can double or even triple the recipe.
How to store homemade Zaxby’s sauce
Keep this sauce in an airtight container or jar in the refrigerator. It will last about a week in the refrigerator. I like to give it a stir before serving.
Common questions
They are made with different ingredients but are very similar in consistency and taste. Canes sauce is a little spicier.
