Homemade Zax Sauce

I’m no stranger to fry sauce now that we live in Utah but I do miss the delicious Zax sauce I would get from Zaxby’s in Georgia.

Zaxby’s is a popular restaurant chain in the south that is known for its fried chicken, seasoned fries, and zalads. It’s similar to Raising Canes and just like Canes, they serve a creamy, flavorful sauce with their meals.

Since I don’t live close to the restaurant anymore, I knew I had to try making a copycat version of Zaxby’s sauce at home. I experimented with different ingredient combinations and came up with this recipe that I think tastes very close to the original.

Zaxby’s sauce ingredients

For my copycat recipe you will need just a few simple ingredients.

  • Ketchup – Gives a little sweetness to the sauce.
  • Mayonnaise – I like using Dukes mayonnaise but you can use your favorite mayo.
  • White vinegar – Vinegar adds a little tang to the sauce. You can substitute with apple cider vinegar.
  • Worcestershire sauce – Ties all of the ingredients together.
  • Garlic powder – Adds delicious flavor to the sauce.
  • Black pepper – Ground black pepper add a touch of spice to the sauce.
  • Seasoned salt – I use Lawry’s seasoned salt.
Bowl of ketchup, mayonnaise, vinegar, worcestershire, and seasonings.

Heather’s recipe tips

  • I recommend letting the sauce sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to let the flavors really come together. If you can make it the night before, even better. The longer it sits, the better it tastes.
  • If you prefer your sauce spicy, you can add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a splash of hot sauce.
  • If you would like to use this as a salad dressing, you could add a little extra vinegar or a splash of milk to thin out the sauce.
  • Making this for a crowd? You can double or even triple the recipe.

How to store homemade Zaxby’s sauce

Keep this sauce in an airtight container or jar in the refrigerator. It will last about a week in the refrigerator. I like to give it a stir before serving.
