I am sharing my copycat Zaxby’s fry seasoning recipe so you can make your own flavorful fries at home. After some testing, I have found that this combination of spices is a close version to the popular restaurant.

Since moving to the west coast, I have been missing some of my favorite east coast restaurants like Zaxby’s. They are a tasty, fast-casual restaurant that specializes in chicken but happen to have some amazing french fries and are also known for their famous Zax sauce.

Zaxby’s serves a side of seasoned crinkle fries with most of their meals. The fry seasoning is the perfect combination of salty with a hint of sweetness and really makes the french fries stand out from other restaurants.

Since there isn’t a Zaxby’s close to our house, I set out to replicate the fry seasoning. After much testing, I think this combination is pretty darn close.

What ingredients are in Zaxby’s fry seasoning

Just a few pantry staples are used to make this recipe.

  • Paprika – Adds a smokey, slightly sweet flavor.
  • Garlic powder – You can substitute with granulated garlic but I prefer the powder.
  • Onion powder – You can substitute with granulated onion but I like the powder.
  • Seasoned salt – I use Lawry’s seasoned salt but feel free to use your favorite brand.
  • Sea salt – You can use sea salt or kosher salt.
  • Oregano – Just a little pinch is needed.
  • Sugar – A hint of sweetness to balance the salt.
  • Cayenne pepper – This is an optional ingredient. It adds a little heat to the mix.

How to make copycat Zaxby’s fry seasoning

An advantage to making your own seasoning mix at home is that you can adjust the amounts to fit your taste.

  1. Combine: Place all of the seasonings and sugar in a bowl.
  2. Stir: Stir them together to fully combine.
  3. Season: Sprinkle the seasoning on the fries when they are still hot.

Heather’s recipe tips

  • Spices: Try not to use old seasonings. The fresher the spices, the better the taste.
  • Quantity: This recipe makes about 1/3 cup. You can easily double this recipe to have leftover seasoning for later.
  • Spicy: If you like spicier flavor, you can increase the cayenne pepper. You can also leave the cayenne pepper out if you prefer.
  • Season: I recommend seasoning the french fries immediately after they finish cooking.

How to use copycat Zaxby’s fry seasoning

This seasoning doesn’t have to be used just on fries. I like using it on french fries, sweet potato fries, tater tots, onion rings, hamburger patties, chicken, mashed potatoes, and even roasted vegetables.

How to store leftover Zaxby’s french fry seasoning

Keep any leftover fry seasoning in an airtight container or jar. It can be kept in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months.

Common questions

How much seasoning should I use?

The amount depends on your taste preference. I would recommend starting with 1 tablespoon of seasoning for 1 pound of fries.
