Servings: 6
- 6 pieces thick, stale bread
- 1 cup milk
- 3 eggs
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 tablespoons butter
Coating
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Preheat a large skillet or griddle over medium-low heat.
Cut each piece of bread into 4 sticks.
Place 1/2 cup sugar and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon in a bowl. Stir together to combine and set aside.
Place eggs, milk, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and vanilla extract in a shallow bowl. Whisk together to combine.
Add 1 tablespoon of butter to the warmed skillet or griddle to melt.
Dip bread sticks in the milk mixture and place on skillet. Cook 3-4 minutes, flip and cook another 3-4 minutes or until golden brown.
Carefully remove cooked bread sticks from skillet and immediately toss in sugar and cinnamon mixture.
Repeat cooking the remaining bread sticks. Add butter to the skillet as needed.
Serve them warm.
- Stale, thick bread works best. If possible, try and find an uncut loaf of bread so that you can cut thicker slices. Thick slices help them not to flop.
- Don't soak the bread too long in the egg mixture so that it doesn't become too soggy.
- Make sure to work in batches when cooking. You want the sticks to have a little space between them.
- Be sure not to let the pan get too hot. You want the French toast sticks to cook through and not burn on the outside.
